Irish language Day

The Alley Theatre & Strabane Library hosted a highly successful Irish Language Day in conjunction with Gaelphobal an tSratha Báin on Saturday 18 th September where both venues were filled to capacity.

People from Strabane District and visitors from throughout the county, neighbouring counties and beyond arrived in their dozens to see the official launch of The Irish language day by Michaela Boyle, Chairperson of Strabane District Council and to enjoy the various talents and view the mired forms of information on display on the day.

Oblivious to the official launch the children thoroughly enjoyed the Facepainting and Arts & Crafts conducted by Ríonach Uí Dhaimhín and Áine Mhic Conluain whilst many others sat back and had a free cupán tae/coffee and scones in the comfort and relaxing atmosphere of Irish traditional music, Irish songs and poetry, performed by Craic, Mícheál Ó Dufaigjh and Áine Mhic Conluain.

Besides the entertainment, tae and scones all those in attendance were treated to a feast of information about the many Irish language activities that are ongoing locally and nationally and in particular about the resumption of Irish classes in the Gaelscoil on Thursday nights and classes in Sion Mills and on Saturday mornings in Castlederg.

Dozens of booklets and information leaflets were handed out to the wider public and many availed of the opportunity to buy some of the Irish language literature on display by the Derry based Bookshop An Cló Ceart, located in Derry's Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin on Great Jame's Street.

All in all it was a very pleasant and successful day and we sincerely hope to see a good turnout at the classes, our conversation sessions on a Saturday morning and at our Irish language Book-Club on the first Saturday of the month.
